Most Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any rules and regulations for the fur industry? If so, is the industry strictly monitored?
First and foremost, the fur industry does not use any endangered species in the making of any products. In the United States the fur industry is highly regulated and only allows humane treatment of the animals used to make furs.
Are coats made from male and female minks exactly the same?
The hide from both male and female minks are used to make furs, but the fur from a female mink is known to weigh less, be more flexible, and have a smoother texture. Female minks also produce fur that is shinier and easier to craft into a wearable style. While it is possible to find fur produced by a male mink, it's more common to find female items because it is often easier to tailor.
What is the best price for an excellent quality fur coat?
There are several factors that make up the price of a fur coat. Some of these factors include the name of the designer and how well known he or she is, how long or short the coat is, how large or small the coat is, and how well it's made. Also, other important factor in determining worth is how well the fur is tailored and the coat's style. Our best advice is to determine an amount that you want to spend on a fur, and then purchase the one that is the best value for that price.
What's warmer: Furs that have long hair or furs that have short hair?
The truth is, the length of the outer hairs on a fur (assuming you're comparing the same type of fur) has nothing to do with how warm the coat is. The feature of the fur that influences the warmth of the fur is the underfur, also known as the fur's "insulation."
Does whether or not a fur is sheared affect how warm it is?
The shear of a fur does not alter how warm the fur is. The warmth of a fur is based on the underfur, not the shear of the top layer. Underfur is the soft, fine undercoat which keeps warmth from entering or escaping.
If a fur has been dyed to a color other than the original fur shade, will the fur's quality be compromised?
The only way in which fur is affected by dying is that it may feel more coarse to the touch than it would have felt before its color was altered.
If I'm wearing my fur and I get caught in the rain will my coat become ruined?
If a fur is caught in a heavy rainstorm and it becomes drenched, the best thing to do is bring it to Fur Boutique so that we can make sure the fur sustains as little damage as possible. If, however, the fur becomes only mildly wet, there should be no harm done. The best advice in this situation is to hang it in a room that gets lots of air circulation. Don't submit the fur to direct heat. Once the fur is completely dry, hold it with both hands and shake it hard a few times, which should restore it to its original state.
I inherited a fur that I just don't like and I don't think I'll every wear. Should I tuck it away in the back of my closet and forget about it?
If you own a fur that you do not love, you always have the option of trading it in for one that you will enjoy wearing. Simply bring it to Fur Boutique for an evaluation.
